I want to go into wedding/event planning when I graduate, and I have planned an event! It's a philanthropic (charity) event called Charity Denim. Alpha Chi Omega Beta Xi chapter is putting it on in order to raise money to help build "Adventure Playground" in Logan, Utah. This playground is a fully handicap-accessible park built entirely by volunteers through donations from the community. It is sponsored by the Whittier Center in Logan.
Charity Denim is to be held at Utah State University in the Taggart Student Center, in the International Lounge from 10am-4pm. We will be selling designer jeans for 40-60% off and a portion of every sale will go towards Adventure Playground.
For my advertising, I have 400 fliers that were donated by Kinko's and they have been set out in Cache Valley Mall at different stores, in the USU TSC, in the USU library,at Logan High School, handed out to individuals, announced in classes, and possibly set out in businesses. I have also sent a press release to the Utah Statesman for a write-up and to be put on the back burner. I sent a press release to the Herald Journal and the event will be posted in the Cache Magazine community calendar, as well as the "Happenings" page on their website. The sorority has also created an event on Facebook, and invited over 700 people. There are also signs placed in the TSC and on the sorority house right next to campus.
On Tuesday we will see how this turns out and how effective our advertising is. I will update.

PR Honesty
Today we had a guest speaker in my Intro to PR class. She works in Magna, UT for ATK "a premier aerospace and defense company." Her job title is Sr. Manager of media relations and communications. Basically she does the PR work for ATK. She works directly with the media and with the astronauts and aeronautical engineers. When something goes wrong, she writes the press release, when a big event is taking place, she promotes it, gets the name of the company out there and brings attention and recognition to the company/event.
She talked about how honesty with the media is key to forming close relationships that are going to get you places. The better networking connections and relationships you can attain, the more opportunities you'll have in your career. This makes perfect sense in that the more people you can call on from different places to assist you in a situation, the better off you are and the better you can do your job. As a PR specialist, if you're dishonest with the press, they're going to find out. It's better to promote through truth and admit wrong doings than look bad later when it's found and published anyways.
I will definitely keeps these tips in mind as I pursue a career in a public relations-related field.
