Online Reputation

TO: Jessica Vasil
FROM: Kari Selin
SUBJECT: Online Reputation
DATE: December 6, 2009

The research I did online revealed very little about you. You are involved in the use of some social media, but your Facebook account is blocked so only your Facebook friends can see your profile and information. This could be beneficial for future employment opportunities because it keeps the focus of information about you on what you willingly provide potential employers. However, I found by that we have a mutual friend on Facebook, which helped me to see your profile in order to gather more information. I felt like this could be something that a future employer would easily do since it’s such a simple act to ask a friend for some help. That is why I followed that route. The following is what I did find.

You are a Junior at Utah State University studying Political Science and Journalism. Originally from Chicago, IL, you only have one sibling, a little sister. You attended Lincoln- Way East High School in Frankfort, IL, and graduated in 2007. Your boyfriend’s name is Rory Bement, you like sports and seem to be athletic yourself. From your pictures online, I see you enjoy rock climbing. You also seem to have a liberal view on life and your rebellious side comes off through your Facebook info. If someone were to be able to see your profile, I don’t think they would get the most professional impression. At the same time, professional may not be your goal. Open and honest would definitely describe you from an online researcher’s perspective.
From your blog I can see that you’re well into your Journalism program, I can only assume that that is what the numbers are for; course numbers. Showing your work online is important and yours is prevalent. Your online work is the best component of all the research I found.

GREEK WEEK FALL 2009

LOGAN, UTAH—Greek Week is coming to Utah State University the week of November 2-5. Greek Week is a week of service, fun, and entertainment focused on the Greek community and organized by the activities chair of Greek Council. This year, Sarah Korich is the activities chair and is planning a fantastic Greek Week. “This year we want to focus on reaching out to the whole campus,” says Sarah. In the past, Greek Week has been solely focused on fun and games for the Greek community. It was a recognition week and a time for the group to grow closer outside of their individual chapters. However, the Greeks have decided their new goal is to reach out to the campus and community. Their new focus is Greeks celebrating Greeks and showing the campus what they’re all about.

The week starts Monday, November 2nd with an all Greek meeting hosting speaker Rick Barnes, former North American Interfraternal Conference (NIC) President and CampusSpeak speaker. Rick travels to college campuses nationwide speaking on topics ranging from leadership styles to drinking, and everything in between. Tuesday the Greeks will participate in the annual Stuff-A-Bus program by asking Logan neighborhood residents for non-perishable items to go to the Logan food pantry. Service is highly valued in the Greek community, and every year the Greeks participate as much as they can in giving to the larger community. Wednesday is a new activity called the Greek Olympics on the USU quad from 3-6pm. Every Greek house is combined into two teams which will participate in competitions such as a mini decathlon, tug-o-war, and a water balloon toss. The assigned teams for the week consist of Team 1: Alpha Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Chi, and Psi Sigma Phi, Team 2: Kappa Delta, Theta Nu Xi, Pi Kappa Alpha, and Delta Sigma Phi. Thursday will then host the famous Lip Sync competition from 5-7pm in the TSC International Lounge. The teams will be singing songs by artists such as Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, and Nsync, and will be judged by volunteers from ASUSU. Ending the Greek Week activities will be an award ceremony Thursday after the lip sync competition. The overall winning team will receive engraved placks for each house and a fiesta party hosted by Greek Council.
Greek Week is planned and implemented by the Greek Council activities chairman along with his/her committee, executive Greek Council, and the Greek advisors. The committee is a mixture of voluntary Greek members representing each house on campus. The executive members of Greek Council are elected members that serve a year term for each position.

Greek Week will provide a fun atmosphere not only for the Greek community, but also for USU students. Everyone is invited to attend the activities each day and participate at their desired level. For more information about Greek Week contact the Greek Council Activities Chair, Sarah Korich.

There will be a day of service where everyone will participate in a service project or help raise money for a philanthropy. The service group has yet to be decided, but some ideas are working with Stuff-A-Bus through the campus service center or St. Jude’s Hospital. Last semester the Greeks raised money for Relay for Life and raised around $2,000. There will also be a lip-sinc contest and performance where each house is grouped into two teams and they compete for a prize. There is also a tentative schedule for a motivational speaker to come present to the campus and Greek community.

CACHE VALLEY CITIZENS LEARN TO CONTROL FINANCES

LOGAN, UTAH—The Cache Valley Area Investors Association teaches individuals to become financially independent and economically content. The Association was founded by Preston Parker who now serves as the president. Parker says in response to reasons for founding the association “I want people to be happy.” There’s way too much opportunity in America for people not to be happy with their finances and their jobs.

The organization was started to give people money advice. It is a way to give individuals more formal education on topics like their finances, investing, and money management. People need to learn how to be financially independent because it can be a rough life when you struggle with money. CVAIA teaches people to lower their expenses and increase passive income in order to become financially independent. Currently, CVAIA brings in speakers to teach different strategies or motivators. They also use books to educate the group about financial independence and wealth. Parker says the top three things a person can invest in are: 1) one’s assets, 2) one’s time, and 3) one’s experience.

Meetings are open to the public and membership is available to anyone who wishes to attend meetings. There are currently eight active members of the association. The group meets every other Thursday at 7pm in the Cache County Chamber of Commerce building in Logan, Utah. "United Breaks Guitars"

This song is rather catchy. The tune is memorable and the words are easily stuck in your head, not to mention it’s pretty funny. I think that really contributed to the popularity of this song. However, the most important aspect I see that really skyrocketed this hit song is how so many people can relate to this experience, or one similar to it. Many people have bad experiences with an airline or two, whether it be smashed property, lost luggage, seat problems, or arrival/departure lateness issues. Every problem usually results in negative feelings toward the airline, and when someone else shares their problems, it just builds upon their already disapproving views. This is an example of the significant effect social media can have on a person or company.
I think that people don’t understand the significant role of PR and social media. YouTube is just one example of how 1 million people can hear the complaint of one individual in a matter of 3 days. What companies need to be looking out for today, is that this can happen easily and to anyone. The traditional rule of thumb when it comes to customer satisfaction has always been for every person that has a negative experience they will tell ten people about it, and every person that has a positive experience will tell two people about it. “United Breaks Guitars” is a perfect example of how social media has changed that rule from ten people hearing a negative message to possibly millions upon millions. To compound this even further is the general tread of society to be more interested in the bad than then good. People are more likely to seek out negative video clips and news stories than positive ones. Social media makes all of this possible.
What really gets me is how once United realized that the media message traveling throughout the world in this video was really going to affect them; they decided they should do something for this man and his broken guitar. It shouldn’t take 1 video, a million viewers, and $180 million lost so make the appropriate people listen to one dissatisfied customer. They may serve thousands of people a day, but without the proper treatment of people, what does that matter. United Airlines could have bought over 50,000 guitars for the money they lost in stocks due to this video. This just goes to show that treating people poorly will come back and byte you in the butt, and cost you a lot of money!
Social media is the new media of 2009. Many people are discovering it, embracing it, and spreading it. This means a drastic change for companies, celebrities, and people all around the world. They may want to look into their company standards, their ethics, and their way of doing business because the world will know when something goes wrong, and it could very possibly blow up their face. Social media is the voice of the people and they doing something to make a difference.

Dear Cousin Michelle,
Public Relations is a form of promoting a company, product, or program. It is similar to advertising in that the goal is to further recognition and draw in an audience or clients. It includes endeavors to insure the company’s public image is strong and growing. Public Relations involves a mixture of marketing, research, and problem solving. The goals of a PR campaign or the use of PR in any aspect of business relate closely to making some product or company more widely known and recognized. Public Relations specialists often deal with the mass media. This is through newspapers, magazines, television, etc.
One large part of PR deals with overcoming negative events or happenings associated with a company. It also helps when a dwindling company is trying to grow. For instance, when a large software company builds up the release of a new product and then the product has a default with it, a Public Relations specialist would come in to turn around the negative light surrounding the event. They would also deal with the media coverage in order to change the poor image of the company.

Planning an Event

I want to go into wedding/event planning when I graduate, and I have planned an event! It's a philanthropic (charity) event called Charity Denim. Alpha Chi Omega Beta Xi chapter is putting it on in order to raise money to help build "Adventure Playground" in Logan, Utah. This playground is a fully handicap-accessible park built entirely by volunteers through donations from the community. It is sponsored by the Whittier Center in Logan.
Charity Denim is to be held at Utah State University in the Taggart Student Center, in the International Lounge from 10am-4pm. We will be selling designer jeans for 40-60% off and a portion of every sale will go towards Adventure Playground.
For my advertising, I have 400 fliers that were donated by Kinko's and they have been set out in Cache Valley Mall at different stores, in the USU TSC, in the USU library,at Logan High School, handed out to individuals, announced in classes, and possibly set out in businesses. I have also sent a press release to the Utah Statesman for a write-up and to be put on the back burner. I sent a press release to the Herald Journal and the event will be posted in the Cache Magazine community calendar, as well as the "Happenings" page on their website. The sorority has also created an event on Facebook, and invited over 700 people. There are also signs placed in the TSC and on the sorority house right next to campus.
On Tuesday we will see how this turns out and how effective our advertising is. I will update.

PR Honesty

Today we had a guest speaker in my Intro to PR class. She works in Magna, UT for ATK "a premier aerospace and defense company." Her job title is Sr. Manager of media relations and communications. Basically she does the PR work for ATK. She works directly with the media and with the astronauts and aeronautical engineers. When something goes wrong, she writes the press release, when a big event is taking place, she promotes it, gets the name of the company out there and brings attention and recognition to the company/event.
She talked about how honesty with the media is key to forming close relationships that are going to get you places. The better networking connections and relationships you can attain, the more opportunities you'll have in your career. This makes perfect sense in that the more people you can call on from different places to assist you in a situation, the better off you are and the better you can do your job. As a PR specialist, if you're dishonest with the press, they're going to find out. It's better to promote through truth and admit wrong doings than look bad later when it's found and published anyways.
I will definitely keeps these tips in mind as I pursue a career in a public relations-related field.

Photoshop Experiment #2

First I imported and cropped a picture of Jessica Alba’s face. I then created another background layer in front of the face. I blurred the lines between the real face and the imported one. I then cut out hearts on the fence and turned them yellow with paint bucket. I then used clone stamp and got rid of the window on the house in the background. Then I adjusted the hue, saturation, and lightness of both the background photo and the face to make the skin look purple.

Photoshop experiment #1

For this picture, I first changed the color of the water to an aqua instead of blue. I created a layer over the picture, and highlighted the water with the selection tool, and then used paint bucket to make it lime green. I then faded the opacity of the layer to about 18%. Next I created another layer and imported a picture of a parasailer. I cut around the picture and deleted it then I zoomed in and used the eraser to get as close as possible. I then created another layer and imported the picture of the seagulls. I cut around them and placed them on the rocks. I made a text box and typed in “Mexico” so it looks like it’s part of the parachute/sail thing. I also used the clone stamp to clone the rocks and made the rocks come out further in some areas. I also left some green color on the rocks to make it look mossy!

TIffany & Co. Part 2

The next part of our PR campaign to promote Tiffany & Co. is a client portfolio. This portfolio would be sent out to households that bring in $250,000 or more per year. This is about 2% of the U.S. population, and is the clientele that Tiffany wants to target with this campaign. For many years Tiffany & Co. has built up their name with top-quality products and a diamond that no one has been able to match in beauty. Although Tiffany is a luxury product company, we want to tell customers why they still need to be shopping at Tiffany's, even with these economic hardships. We created an example of this client portfolio which looks like a Tiffany box, and when unfolded, it holds inserts and information for each customer. It was inspired by diamond rings and wedding invitations, so the portfolio resembles a large wedding invitation. Inside there are inserts including: a brief history of the company, the promoted "Tiffany Teardrop" necklace with a description of what it benefits, what it represents, and what it's made of. The portfolio also includes a description of what a tiffany diamond is, and why it is above all other diamonds, and common questions and answers customers might have.
These portfolios are expected to retain customer loyalty and promote the Tiffany difference and Tiffany customer service.

Tiffany & Co. Part 1

I just finished a project for my Intro to PR class. It was a crisis management, group project and we were instructed to plan a PR campaign for a company that has been recently affected by a crisis. The company my group chose was Tiffany & Co. We planned our PR campaign around the economy crisis lowing their sales and the crisis of counterfeit products being sold over ebay. Our campaign included a celebrity/promotional event called "Breakfast At Tiffany's". This is a brunch for specially invited celebrity guests. It will be a red carpet event with press invited from all over the country. The event will take place in New York City. At the event, there will be Tiffany's finest in jewelry items on display for purchase. It will also be the premiere revealing of a new Tiffany necklace named the "Tiffany Teardrop". The necklace, in the shape of a teardrop, represents the world united in stopping the use of "blood diamonds". This necklace will be available for purchase at the brunch event and a portion of the proceeds will go to families that have been affected by the mining of blood diamonds. After the event the necklace will be available online for the general public. This is the first part of our PR campaign for Tiffany & Co. Next week I will tell more.

Facebook Article

One of the readings for my class this week is about facebook, and how it's changing relationships between people. You can know so much about a person through facebook friends, but not have that personal relationship. I agree, facebook does take the intimacy away from friendships in the real world, and it creates a whole other "online" world for people to live in. I'm a myspace person, but it was more because I could create a personalized, colorful profile for myself with lots of things that show off my personality and who I am. But not necessarily intimate facts. Facebook and Myspace are a great way to keep in touch with high school friends, or people you meet on a trip, and probably won't see again. The news feed about everyone's life on facebook is a bit excessive in my mind, but if those are things people thrive on, go for it. The article is correct, in that there is a barrier between parents and children on Facebook, but Facebook has become a whole different social group. It's similar to friends and family social groups. People act differently depending on which social group they're with, and it's difficult to mix any two. Facebook is just another group, and it's hard to share the person you are on there with many parents in the world. Just my thoughts.

Event planning

I'm planning an event! Kinda. I'm trying to bring a speaker to USU next fall, which is sort of planning an event. I want to go in to some kind of event planning, mostly wedding planning, after I graduate, so this is exciting for me. I won't say what it is just yet because it's not for sure yet, I have to find funding first. But I'll update as the process continues and eventually reveal who and what. I'm coordinating with my organization, Alpha Chi Omega, as well as Student Arts & Lectures, Red Zone, and some others to market the event and raise participation. I'm hoping for 300 people! We'll see though. The process has just started, but it is fun. I am applying for a grant in order to fund the event, and am coordinating with the right people to look for other means of funding in case the grant doesn't come through. I'll be scheduling a location (probably the TSC), deciding on a time and date, coordinating marketing and advertising around the campus and community, and making sure everything runs smoothly and we get a good turnout. It will be an educational experience, not only because the speaker has a lot to offer, but learning the ropes of planning will be a learning experience as well. We'll see how it goes, but I'm excited!

Google's Trace

So I just read the article called "When Google Is Not Your Friend", on the CNet News website. It was quite interesting that Google can trace users through searches they've typed into their computers. However, I think this is an invasion of privacy of U.S. citizens. I'm pretty sure the FBI can resort to other means of proving criminal behavior than going through search engine words. There are many curious people around the world that could type sketchy words into a search engine and if that's going to link them to a murder, HA that's ridiculous. Of course they could argue that "Freedom of Curiosity" is not in the First Amendment, but then there should be some sort of U.S. freedom protection to search the World Wide Web. Wouldn't you think?

html codes

This week I've been learning about html codes. There is a vast amount of symbols involved that are difficult to remember off the top of my head. I find the html coding fairly interesting, although it’s a lot of tedious work and I have trouble staying patient. I feel like this information will benefit me greatly in what I plan to do. I’d like to be a wedding planner and if I know how to manage my own website my business will be much more lucrative. So although it’s a lot of work, I can see the value in learning html codes and am excited to put what I’ve learned into practice.
