PR Honesty

Today we had a guest speaker in my Intro to PR class. She works in Magna, UT for ATK "a premier aerospace and defense company." Her job title is Sr. Manager of media relations and communications. Basically she does the PR work for ATK. She works directly with the media and with the astronauts and aeronautical engineers. When something goes wrong, she writes the press release, when a big event is taking place, she promotes it, gets the name of the company out there and brings attention and recognition to the company/event.
She talked about how honesty with the media is key to forming close relationships that are going to get you places. The better networking connections and relationships you can attain, the more opportunities you'll have in your career. This makes perfect sense in that the more people you can call on from different places to assist you in a situation, the better off you are and the better you can do your job. As a PR specialist, if you're dishonest with the press, they're going to find out. It's better to promote through truth and admit wrong doings than look bad later when it's found and published anyways.
I will definitely keeps these tips in mind as I pursue a career in a public relations-related field.
